Surge Season Ends

FC Surge concluded the 2018 WPSL season on Saturday 7/7 at home versus Florida Gulf Coast Dutch Lions.  Surge neede a win to overtake the Lions and finish in 1st place in the Sunshine Conference.  The teams were pretty even in the 1st half but neither team could find the back of the net.  The 2nd half saw the Surge maintain control for most of the play but the Lions packed their defense playing for the tie they knew would propel them to the playoffs.  The one point however did not earn them the Conference title, that honor went to Tampa Bay United on a head to head tiebreaker having beaten the Lions earlier in the season.  Tampa had already chosen not to move on to the South Regionals so Florida Gulf Coast Dutch Lions will represent the Sunshine Conference in Chattanooga, Tennessee July 14-15.

The Surge had a great season overall.  Unbeaten at home and unbeaten in regulation time, the Surge had a 4-1-2 record, the only loss coming in game 2 at Florida Sol in a storm shortened game leaving 17 minutes unplayed with a 1-2 score.  The other tie was also a shortened game, a 0-0 result in 48 minutes versus Tampa.  Wins came off of Florida Krush 2-1, Team Boca Blast 3-2, Puerto Rico Pride 8-1 and Florida Tropics 7-1, outscoring opponents 21-7.  Twenty seven players were rostered 7 of whom played in every match.  Fourteen are current college players (from UM, STU, UCF, USF, PBA, TCU, American, Ball State, Stetson), 12 post grad alum (from FIU, FAU, UM, Barry, Nova Southeastern, Warner, Campbell, East Carolina, UT Martin, and Princeton) and one recent high school grad.

Point leader Chrissy Gratz had 6 Goals and 5 Assists, followed one point behind by Eva Castano Candela with 6 Goals and 4 Assists.  Krissy Fisher knocked in 3 Goals and Yari Bradfield scored 2 Goals and 2 Assists. Lexi Castellano added a Goal and 2 Assists as did April Perry.  Dejah Cason netted 1 Goal and an Assist, Nicole Richards scored one Goal, Alexis Hernandez had 2 Assists and Grace Rapp also had 1 Assist.  GK's Phallon Tullis Joyce played two complete games (both wins) with 3 Goals Against,
Jo Rathbun started 4 matches in net and was not scored on, Rikki Farquharson played one complete game in net and finished 4 other half's, with 4 Goals Against.  Alexis Hernandez, Eva Castano Candela, and Chrissy Gratz all earned league Player of the Week honors during the season.  Eva, Paula Quintero, and Shanoska Young will be attending the WPSL's first International Combine July 20-22 in Oklahoma.

Led by 3rd year Head Coach Ramiro Vengoechea and 2nd year Assistant Coach Eddie Hernandez, the Surge also relied on game day Coach Iko DeOliveira and GK Coach Mauro.  The Surge thanks Sponsors Janney Montgomery Scott LLC and SoccerLocker as well as all the generous donors to the GoFundMe campaign.

As the College players return to school the veterans will call up other local players to field squads to take on two local colleges in preseason exhibition matches; Sunday 8/12 6pm versus FIU and Sunday 8/19 1pm at Barry.

TryOuts for next seasons Surge team will be scheduled for April 2019.
